I was told by Chris Kaku a year or 2 ago that poppers are at a disadvantage in open style battles. I think there is truth to it in that the music in open style battles is generally less consistent in rhythm/beats, tho I won’t say less funky, and popping moves are generally less flashy.
But there should still be way to break the curse. First and foremost, letting loose of the popping framework and connecting to the music are essential. Then incorporating elements from other styles will also help.
Here are poppers battling in open style events that I think can serve as inspirations:
Gucchon: (this man is the best in this!)
Greenteck:
Kite:
For this round, the music is very rap-heavy and favors Skitzo’s style. Even tho Kite is my teacher, I don’t think forcing his style onto the song makes a good round. I may change my opinion in the future tho.
